zoo lighting

There are two night zoos in the world, and I have designed the lighting for both of them.

Some other zoos have attempted lighting for occasional evening use, but Night Safari in Singapore, and Night Zoo in China, were designed from the ground up to operate every night of the year, after dark only.

This presented a fascinating challenge to the design teams, and lighting is crucial to the success of these attractions.

As the only theatrical designer involved in these projects my input was wide ranging; we adapted many theatrical attitudes and approaches in both projects.

Night Safari - Singapore

An extraordinary project which introduced me to the zoo world, which is more like the theatre world than one might expect.

Night Zoo - Guangzhou, China

Working with colleagues from Singapore, the successful formula of Night Safari was developed further for this huge project in Southern China.

Badgers - Paignton Zoo, England

A small but fascinating project. Feral badgers moved into the zoo, and a decision was taken to display them: working in close collaboration with conservation experts, not to disturb the badger sett, I designed a lighting installation to minimise ground impact, and to simulate a bright full moon.
