Site-specific performances and events are devised for a
particular location.
I
believe the best site-specific work theatrically animates
a site 'as found', creating atmosphere and drama with
lighting and sound, rather than scenery and structures.
Larger
site-specific projects may involve very extensive lighting
and technical infrastructure, using generators and heavy
mains distribution. Rationalising this into the production
logistics, while respecting the concept and site chosen to
work in, is part of the job of a site-specific lighting
designer.
Much of
my work in this field has been in collaboration with
Hilary Westlake, a leading exponent of the form and
founding director of Lumiere & Son Theatre
Company. We collected awards.
Recently
I have made several pieces with Stephan Koplowitz, the
celebrated New York choreographer, in sites as varied as
The British Library and a disused industrial plant in
Germany. We collected awards.
